The maternal mortality ratio dropped by 45% from 1990 to 2013. However, by 2013, there were still about 2 deaths per 1000 births (UN estimates). The maternal mortality ratio in developing regions is still 14 times higher than in the developed regions. The lack of skilled health personnel during deliveries, and antenatal care, are key causes of higher mortality rates in developing countries. "Improve maternal health" is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.
