The global average surface temperature (over land and ocean) increased by an estimated 0.85 deg.C in the period from 1880 to 2012. That increase in global temperatures is mainly attributed to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases generated from human activity. During the 21st century, unless that trend is reverted, global temperatures could rise further by over 4 deg.C, which poses real threats: glacier retreat leading to global sea level rise, ocean acidification, extreme weather events, changes in agricultural productivity, and extinctions of numerous ecosystems.
