The Montreal Protocol has reduced by 98% consumption of ODS's such as Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons, which were widely used in: aerosol sprays (dry cleaning, fumigants), blowing agents for foams (fire extinguishers), solvents, and refrigerants (in refrigerators and airconditioners). Nonetheless, there is an ongoing effort to reduce production and consumption of non-controlled substances with smaller ozone-depleting effects, and stop illegal trade of controlled ODS's (between 7,000 and 14,000 tonnes of CFCs are smuggled annually into developing countries).
