Looking at agregate worldwide figures, cycling is not as risky as commonly thought, with just one death for every 32 million kilometres traveled in bicycle (ECF data). Nonetheless, the number of accidents and fatalities in cycling vary greatly across regions, depending on factors such as road quality, training of drivers, speed limits, and controls for driving-under-influence. In the United States there were 743 pedalcyclist fatalities in 2013, 2.3% of total fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. There were also 48,000 injured pedalcyclists in 2013.
