Still today, millions of people worldwide live in life or health-threatening conditions, in overcrowded slums and informal settlements. Ensuring adequate housing is about guaranteeing a secure home and community for everyone (including the ill, disabled, elder, and unemployed) to live in peace and dignity. According to the UN, an adequate home should be provided with: security, for legal protection against forced evictions and other threats; availability of services, such as water and electricity, for adequate sanitation, heating, lighting, cooking, food storage, and refuse disposal; affordability, to prevent compromising other basic human needs; habitability, to protect from weather elements; accessibility, for persons with or without disabilities; location adequacy, in proximity to employment opportunities, health-care, childcare, schools, and other services; and, cultural adequacy, taking into account the cultural identity of its residents.
