The fair apportioning of wealth derived from valuable extractive resources like minerals, metals, stones, hydrocarbons and timber can be critical to maintaining peace within nations and across regions. According to research from UNEP, the presence of abundant valuable resources, especially in countries with acute poverty or lacking other forms of income, exacerbates the risks of conflict by creating an incentive for groups to attempt to capture them by taking control of resource-rich territories. Between 1990 and 2013, there were at least 18 civil wars and internal unrest fuelled by the exploitation of natural resources.
