Each such membrane is a tube with minuscule pores throughout its length. Accordingly, filling a filter with numerous membranes allows increasing the effective surface area of the filter, thus increasing filtration rate. Two common ways to use such membranes are: connecting both ends of each membrane to the dirty water inlet; or, connecting both ends of each membrane to the clean water outlet. In both cases, the tubes are bent to form u-shapes that isolate clean water from dirty water.
