Bike locks that connect to a system that enables unlocking/locking of bikes for authorized users only, would enable bicycle sharing systems without expensive docking stations (eliminating the need for locking mechanisms and consoles at the docking stations). Radio signals or smart phones could be used to lock/unlock the bike lock. Checked-out and return location would be tracked either through a GPS installed on the bike, or through the user's smart phone. A web or mobile application would enable users to locate available bikes at any time.
