Waze is a GPS-based navigation app for sharing real-time traffic and road information. It is community-based, as each user with the app open in the background of a mobile device passively contributes traffic information (i.e. location and speed of travel). Additionally, users may actively report accidents, or any other hazards along the way, helping other users make better decisions on what roads to take to avoid hazards and traffic jams. Users of the app navigator receive route directions to minimize the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) based on the real-time traffic conditions of all alternative routes. Such route optimizations, when aggregated could potential alleviate traffic throughout the city, depending on the number of users of Waze. The app was launched in 2008 in Israel. In 2013, Waze Ltd. was acquired by Google.
