viaCycle eliminates the need for special docking stations by installing in each bicycle an automated lock, and a GPS tracking system. The system aims at significantly reducing or eliminating costs of docking stations, while allowing a greater flexibility on the pick-up and drop-off location. Users would find bicycles through an interactive map in the viaCycle web or mobile app, then unlock a bicycle for use through the app, by a phone call or text message. The technology pack in each bicycle included a battery that is automatically recharged through solar cells and a dynamo. viaCycle started in 2010 as a student project at Georgia Tech. In 2012, it was part of the Y-Combinator startup program, and introduced pilot bicycle sharing systems at various locations, including San Francisco.
