SoBi provides bikes integrated with a GPS-enabled smart lock that allows users to find a bike and unlock it through a smartphone. Compared to conventional bike sharing systems using expensive and bulky docks for securing bikes, Social Bicycles can lock to regular racks. Moreover, the position of any bike can be monitored at any time by the bike share provider. The smart lock includes a keypad for entering a passcode to unlock the bike. It also includes a battery that is charged through a dynamo when the bicycle is in use, and through a solar panel when it sits idle. The battery powers the GPS tracking and communication system, and the unlocking mechanism. Development of SoBi started in 2009. As of 2016, it is operating at various locations in the US, Canada, and Australia.
