Lyft is a web and mobile application for connecting passengers who need a ride with drivers having a car. It primarily allows drivers to offer a service similar to a taxi. However, drivers may also use the service whenever they commute as a way of carpooling. The Lyft line service allows drivers to pick-up additional passengers in the way, thus further increasing the occupancy rate of the vehicle, which could help reduce traffic congestion. Lyft enables car owners to increase the utilization of their cars and get paid for it, thus increasing the return on their invested capital. Furthermore, services like Lyft may allow users with little need for a private vehicle not to buy one. In the U.S. alone, there are over 250 million cars and light trucks, which sit idle an average of 92% of the time. Lyft was launched in 2012 as a service of Zimride (which was focused on longer trips).
