A portable water filter that removes bacteria and parasites responsible for causing common diarrhoeal diseases. LifeStraw is filled with hollow fiber membranes containing pores 2 microns wide that allow clean water to escape, while trapping pathogens inside. Without using chemicals, LifeStraw removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria (including E. coli and salmonella), and 99.9% of prozoa (including giardia and cryptosporidium). It is 9 inches (22.5 cm) long, has 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, and can be hung around the neck. It can filter up to 264 gallons (1000 liters) before replacement. Users simply place the bottom end of LifeStraw in unfiltered water, and suck clean water. Vestergaard introduced Life Straw in 2005, as an emergency response tool to filter water contaminated following natural disasters. LifeStraw filters were distributed in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2010 Pakistan floods, and 2011 Thailand floods. It is also a good travel companion for backpacking, hiking, and camping.
