A solar-powered bin that wirelessly communicates fullness level to prevent unnecessary trips for trash collection. Bigbelly also integrates a compaction system that allows the bin to swallow up to 8 times more trash than standard bins, reducing the number of collections by up to 80%. The solar panel charges the internal battery during daylight hours, allowing the station to continue functioning for up to 72 hours without direct sunlight. Data is sent through the cellular network and is stored in the company's servers for access. Bigbelly is used by numerous cities in more than 47 countries. In 2015, the company also began testing Bigbelly's with wi-fi hotspots for providing free wi-fi in New York City.
