Located in Kern County - California, the Alta Wind Energy Center is the largest wind farm in the world (as of 2013), with a generation capacity of 1,548 MW. It produces enough electricity to power 450,000 homes. Commissioned on 2010, the original plan consisted of 320 wind turbines occupying a 9,000 acre (36 km2) area. The project was led by Terra-Gen Power and the power produced is purchased by Southern California Edison. The wind center reduces CO2 emissions by an estimate of 5.2 million metric tons, equivalent to taking 446,000 cars off the road.
